INTO THE ZONE: Journeys in the Thames Estuary
In Leigh’s Old Town on summer weekends, the two wharves at its most easterly point act like magnets. If the tide is up, the longing to leap into the estuary is strong. It isn’t enough for these thrill-seekers to sit and dangle their feet over the edge. They need the rush of hurling themselves off it. The urge to jump is the urge to live, and the greatest endorphin burst of all is in the split second when they are airborne.
This collection explores the sense of abandon in these divers and jumpers; the exhilaration of a journey ‘into the zone’, the dream of flying. If only they could bottle that moment of freedom they experience between leaping off the wharf and smacking the water.
